1) Describe your job at BRIDGES.

Colin Walkes: I see my role as Director of BRIDGES at Belle Glade as a connector of people to resources, not only for our families but to my team partners as well. As the director of BRIDGES, I have to be a cheerleader for all things positive that can impact our members and community at large, quality of life. Furthermore, as director, I must maintain intentionality in service delivery in order to reach desired outcomes for our families, thus I must ensure the design and implementation of all services involve those we serve.

2) Why did you decide to work at BRIDGES

Colin Walkes: My decision to work for BRIDGES at Belle Glade is deeply rooted in the philosophy that service to others is a honor, privilege and duty. The issues my community face daily drives me to a solution orientated mind; being in a leadership role provides me the opportunity to help a multitude of people from various walks of life.

3) What do you enjoy most about your job?

Colin Walkes: I enjoy being actively involved with our members, partners and my team. Being involved from conception to birth of an initiative provides a very satisfying feeling. The joy of seeing families come to BRIDGES primarily for child care, and then transition to learn about awareness as mothers and fathers about their child’s development, brings joy to my soul.

4) How are you making a difference in the lives of BRIDGES families?

Colin Walkes: I do believe I’m making a difference in the lives of our families by facilitating an atmosphere in our building that promotes positivity and sparks a thought provoking culture surrounding family dynamics.

5) What do you hope families gain from attending BRIDGES activities?

Colin Walkes: My hope is that our families gain insight that will afford them a better quality of life. I hope that our families through participating in our activities will be able to see their way out of any dark moment they may encounter in life and to know that BRIDGES will always be here for them.

6) Tell us about yourself –

Colin Walkes: I’m a child of God, husband, son, brother, father and former Mayor of Pahokee, Florida. I was elected as Mayor of Pahokee in 2013-2016. I am married to Kimberly Wakes and we have four children. I believe in being a good steward of the gifts given to me. With this belief, the work I do is an honor, privilege, duty, and a right, and I credit this philosophy to my success to date.

I was born in Barbados and came to the USA at the age of 8 years old and was raised in both cities of Belle Glade and Pahokee. I graduated from Pahokee Middle Senior High School in 1992. To further my education I attended Alabama State University where I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. While in school I enlisted in the US Army Reserve in 1995. The decision to joined the Armed Forces would have a lasting effect on the way I present myself as a professional. I was honorably discharged in 2003. I credit my educational experience at Alabama State University and service in the Armed Forces with keeping me focused on the benefits associated with hard work, determination and perseverance. To better understand public relations and strategies to be a more effective servant, I earned my Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Ashford University in 2014. In conclusion, I’m an optimist who believes in humanity and our ability to adapt and overcome all of life’s challenges when we work together.

7) Tell us something that we do not know about you? Colin Walkes: I’m somewhat of a renaissance man; I enjoy remodeling homes, building toys (box cars, kites and designing backyard golf courses). I love to sing and dance (bopping) but my real passion is cooking in particular Caribbean cuisine.
